Martin Van Buren was a self-made man with his wealth coming both from his career as a lawyer and as a successful politician. He served as Secretary of State, Vice President and President. After his presidency he retired to his home but he did make a few more entrances into politics to attempt the presidency again, but largely he enjoyed his retirement. He spent it with his family and as a vocal member of the anti-slavery movement.

Grover Cleveland also got his wealth from his career as a lawyer and he married the daughter of a wealthy lawyer. Another part of his wealth was an estate that he owned near Washington D.C. which he sold for a substantial profit. He retired to his estate in New Jersey where he spent his time voicing his opinion on political matters and acting as a trustee of Princeton University.
